Right! You can write, right?
After all, we all do it pretty much every day. Emails, text messages, company updates; writing is something we’ve all done for most of our lives.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t make you a good writer. More importantly, it doesn’t make you a writer who is capable of making your business sell more stuff.
This is why, if you’re a start-up and you have the budget, hiring a writer is one of the best investments you’ll make.
Here are some other reasons.
1. Bad writing makes you look rubbish
It really does.
Any copy on your website that’s littered with typos and poor grammar will suggest you’ve rushed it. Worse, it’ll lead some people to think you’re negligent.
You can be bothered – that’s why you’ve gone into business. And that’s why you need a skilled writer to give your business the best possible voice online.
2. You’ll get far more for your money (your time is money – remember)
If you invest your own time in writing for your company, you’re spending money.
As a start-up entrepreneur, you’ll quickly learn that your time is invaluable and incredibly expensive. It therefore stands to reason that you’ll get far more for your money if you pay someone else to do the writing.
Think about it – where else should you be investing your time? If it’s new sales, marketing or partnership building, paying someone to write your copy will deliver a far greater return.
3. They’ll get you the results you need
Professional writers know how to craft copy that works. They’re not just great at writing sentences you want to read; they write sentences that encourage potential customers to take action.
That’s a skill that you can’t acquire without experience. Therefore, if you decide to take on the writing yourself, how long will it be before you start to see the results?
Copy that completely bores people or fails to persuade them will not achieve the goals you set for your business. Simple.
4. Your blog will finally ‘happen’
There are far too many examples of business blogs that fall by the wayside after an initial flurry of activity.
This is for one simple reason: time. If you undertake the blogging for your business in-house, you’re probably going to struggle to make it a consistent endeavour.
A professional writer will, because that’s their job. What’s more, they’ll write blog posts that Google will love and which will provide a measurable return on investment for your content marketing strategy.
5. You’re far too close to the business
This is one of the most overlooked reasons for hiring outside help when it comes to writing.
You’re too close to what’s going on to write objectively.
This can manifest itself in a number of ways. Copy can become far too navel-gazing (no one cares about you – they want to know what you can do for them), and the words you write might be so insular that literally no one outside of your brain knows what you’re talking about.
A great copywriter will be able to take the intricacies and technicalities of your business and make them digestible for normal people. They’ll also ensure your copy is entirely customer focused.
I’m under no illusion that starting up a business usually leaves the founders with very little capital to play with. However, writers don’t have to be expensive.
If you look hard enough, you’ll find some budget for a decent copywriter. I promise it’ll be worth it.
